Bladder issues are a common and troubling concern for many people. The three main types of bladder conditions: bladder urgency, bladder frequency, and bladder pain, can be experienced by anyone, regardless of their age or biological sex. While some people may think, “This is just how my bladder is,” these symptoms are NOT NORMAL and may indicate more serious conditions or dysfunction.
Most people with healthy bladders, when staying adequately hydrated, can hold their bladders for 3-4 hours at a time. When healthy people do use the bathroom, they should be able to pee for between 12-15 seconds. 12-15 seconds of urination equates to roughly 1 – 2.5 cups of urine per bathroom trip.
If you have experienced any or all of the above symptoms, you should consult a health professional. Bladder issues, while frustrating by themselves, can cause further problems down the line if they are not addressed quickly.
Bladder issues may be difficult to explain to your urologist or primary care provider. Your health care provider may say they cannot find anything wrong with your bladder or may prescribe you some medication for pain, but are they actually treating the root cause of your bladder concerns?
You’d be surprised to know that your bladder issues could actually be a problem of the muscles of the pelvis and not the organ itself. The muscles of the pelvis, called the pelvic floor muscles, cannot be seen from the outside and, in fact, many people do not know they are even there. If you have heard of the pelvic floor muscles, you’ve probably heard of Kegels. During a Kegel, you are contracting the muscles of the pelvic floor.
While you may believe incontinence and bladder issues stem from weak or loose pelvic floor muscles, it’s actually the opposite case. Pelvic floor muscle tightness and muscle spasms can oftentimes be the cause of your bladder frequency, urgency, and/or pain. Tight pelvic floor muscles can not only affect your bladder, but also your sexual function and the muscles of the rectum. Proper training of the pelvic floor muscles is key to lessening your pelvic pain and bladder conditions.
