Periodically, we’ll be highlighting one of our awesome Rebalance team members so you can get to know the people who make our clinic possible. This week, meet Elayne! Elayne has been a physical therapist for 15 years, 14 of those being in pelvic floor medicine. She is a Women’s Health Certified Specialist, certified in SMFA (Selective Functional Movements Assessments), and has earned a Certificate of Achievement in Pelvic Health from the APTA.
A turn of events during her sports medicine clinical rotation in graduate school led to Elayne’s specialization in pelvic floor medicine. The therapist who she was originally placed with had an injury which prevented him from seeing patients, so she was shifted over to the next available clinician —a pelvic floor therapist—to complete her clinical. She learned so much from this rotation and it ended up being an important milestone on her career journey. After she graduated, her first job was in a facility that had no pelvic floor therapy and several of the OB/GYN’s on staff encouraged her to start a program. She began taking all of the coursework to become a pelvic floor therapist and never turned back! Elayne loves the fact that she can do both orthopedic and pelvic floor physical therapy here at Rebalance Physical Therapy. She is a huge advocate for the necessity of both —they are so intertwined, you can’t do one without the other!
We asked Elayne what motivates and inspires her to do her amazing work here at Rebalance. Here’s what she had to say:
“I initially started out treating mostly pregnant and postpartum patients – so I have a strong background in helping these patients. But over the years I have spent more and more time treating people in chronic pain. Chronic pain is tough to treat and requires a lot of patience, perseverance and encouragement. I enjoy working with this patient population, helping them manage their chronic issues, listening to their needs and helping them develop a long term plan. I also have had the privilege of spending the last 7 years learning about the transgender population and how to best help these patients with pelvic floor physical therapy. While living in San Francisco, I was lucky enough to learn about post-surgical care from some of the world’s best surgeons in transgender care. I love to learn and it’s been very rewarding both professionally and personally learning from these patients and their personal experiences. I am encouraged and motivated everyday by the perseverance and courage of ALL my patients.”
Outside of the clinic, Elayne has been challenging herself by learning Spanish over the past few years. She loves all things outdoors – camping, hiking, trail running. She also loves all dogs and has an adorable 14 year old Beagle named Spencer. Elayne is also the host of Rebalance’s virtual “Pregnancy, Delivery, & Your Body” workshop on March 25!
