Rebalance Kitchen: Bone Broth Recipe

Posted October 25, 2018| by katherine SHARE

The health benefits of bone broth range from improving joint health to boosting your immune system (it can also help with marathon recovery!). Making bone broth from scratch might seem daunting, but it’s actually simple to do with your crock pot. Rebalance’s Stephanie shares her go-to bone broth recipe:

Stephanie’s Favorite Crockpot Chicken + Bone Broth Recipe

This recipe requires making a whole crockpot chicken (which you can use for other meals) before using the bones of the chicken to make your broth.

Crockpot Whole Chicken

  • –1 whole organic chicken
  • –1 onion, chopped
  • –1 tsp. onion powder
  • –1 tsp. thyme
  • –4 tsp. salt
  • –½ tsp black pepper
  • –½ tsp garlic powder
  1. 1. Toss the onion in the crock pot.
  2. 2. Mix the spices together and rub the spices on the chicken.
  3. 3. Add the chicken to the pot. The onions will add a little buffer to the bottom of the pot, but the chicken will mostly cook in its own juices.
  4. 4. Put the crock pot on low for 8 hours, but it can be anywhere from 5-8 hours depending on your crockpot.
  5. 5. Remove from the meat from the bones and serve or save for later. Save the bones and the juices in your crockpot for your bone broth.

Bone Broth

  • –Remaining bones and cooking juices from the crock pot chicken
  • –2-4 carrots
  • –4 celery stalks
  • –½ cup onion chopped
  • –water, enough to fill your crock pot
  • –thyme
  • –¼ cup apple cider vinegar
  1. 1. After the chicken is complete, remove all the meat and the skin and leave the juice that the chicken was cooked in and the bones in the crock pot.
  2. 2. Add carrots, onion, celery and fill the rest of the crock pot with water and add a little bit of thyme and apple cider vinegar
  3. 3. Let that sit for about an hour before turning on the crock pot. This will give the vinegar time to pull some of the minerals out of the bones.
  4. 4. In about an hour, turn on the crockpot and let it sit from 36-48 hours on low. When it’s ready to be finished, run it through a strainer and put the remaining broth in a quart glass jar. It can sit in the fridge for up to a week.
