The next new use of medical marijuana is here and getting great reviews from patients with pelvic pain syndromes. The California based company, Foria, has released Foria Relief which is an organic cocoa butter-based suppository that delivers 60 mg of THC and 10 mg of CBD directly into the vagina without causing any psychotropic “high”. THC & CBD, the active ingredients in marijuana, have been showing positive results in decreasing pain, swelling, and muscle spasm and cramps. The patients that have been reporting the best relief are those with an over active pelvic floor and tightness and cramping in the pelvic floor muscles. Foria also makes a lubrication infused with THC called Foria Pleasure. The US government has issued a patent on cannabis suppositories for pain, cramps, and nausea, however product development has been held up in the debate over cannabis research. Research is also lacking currently on the actual benefits and long term effects of the suppositories, however several MDs have expressed interest in performing double blind studies. Unfortunately, at this time, these products are only available in California & Colorado, but this may be a treatment option for many people suffering from pelvic pain syndromes in the future!
